Londonderry Leader Book Club

What is the Londonderry Leader Book Club?

The Londonderry Leader Book Club is a voluntary, school wide reading program being introduced for the 2024-25 school year. It is a reading club made up of students, teachers, principals, and parents, all reading the same books and sharing in our conversations about them.

Why create the book club?

There are LOTS of reasons we created the Londonderry Leader Book Club. Our first reason was to create a school wide opportunity for us to read together. At Londonderry, we LOVE reading! However, we do not get many chances to engage in reading together as a school or with our school families. The book club provides that opportunity. The second reading was to provide families with a shared reading experience at home. Some of our fondest memories are reading with our families, and reading together at home builds reading skills and a love for learning. The third reason was to increase exposure to new and classic literature. We all have a favorite book or two from our childhood. For Mr. Wastler, they are Mr. Popper's PenguinsStuart Little, and The Hardy Boys series.

The Londonderry Leader Book Club is a part of the school wide Title I Plan at Londonderry Elementary School. This strategic plan provides targeted goals and action steps for us to continue to strengthen literacy instruction at Londonderry Elementary School. The book club is a portion of our home-school partnership goal.

How do we participate?

How and how much you participate is up to you. We will be reading a new book each trimester. For each book, there will be two book discussion meetings. During Summer 2024, the discussion meetings will be held virtually through Zoom. During the school year, we will be using a hybrid format for book discussions.

Each trimester we will select and announce the newest book for the book club, as well as our first meeting date. Your level of participation is up to you. If you do not want to read a specific book, you will not participate in that trimester. If you cannot make a discussion group, you cannot make a discussion group. Your participation is up to you.
