Over The Counter Medications Guidelines

Guidelines for Over-the Counter (OTC) Medication Administration

The following over the counter (OTC) medications (or their generic equivalents) may be administered by the school nurse/building nurse as directed by the package dosage guidelines, but not to exceed a single dose ** in the school day.   A written/signed request note and the medication in the original and properly labeled container/package must be provided by the parent/guardian. (Examples are listed in parenthesis)

Allergy meds (Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec)

Antacids (Tums, Maalox, Mylanta)

Anti—diarrheal (Imodium)

Cold/Sinus/Cough preparations (Tylenol, Advil, Triaminic, Dayquil, Mucinex, Sudafed)

Dramamine

Eye drops (lubricants, allergy relief)

Lactaid

Menstrual /analgesic relief (Excedrin, Pamprin, Midol)

**Throat/Cough Lozenges (Menthol) – may be more than a single dose

Topical lotion/cream/ointment (SPF, Ivy Block, anti-itch)
