Ways to Share Books With Your Child

Paired Reading - Read the story aloud at the same time.

Shared Reading - Read to your child, allowing him/her to "chime in" on the repetitive parts of parts the child feels comfortable reading.

Alternate Reading - You read a page, your child reads a page, etc.

Echo Reading - You read a line or sentence. Then, your child reads the same line or sentence.

Jump-Start Reading - For an older child, read aloud the first few chapters of a book to get him/her started. Usually, this is where the characters are introduced, the plot is set up and the setting is described.

Read and Share - Allow an older child to read a portion of the book silently. Then ask him/her to share a favorite part by reading it aloud to you.
